THIS POST

(11)
will be my last on here. I'm sorry, but the ill-informed tendentious bigotry of another poster, who appears utterly unable to accept that his position is factually incorrect, and can, apparently without any trace of irony use the words "the natural human abhorrence for reggae music", indicates a nasty racist undertone, with which I feel wholly uncomfortable. And before anybody raises the "right to free speech" issue, I am not seeking to silence the poster that I regard ... MORE

Woody says:

Blog post image preview After breaking that record in the park last night to "This Land Is Your Land", I thought to myself who is this Woody Guthrie guy any how. I figured he was some G rated old timer, but after doing a bit of research I find he was a progressive, politcal folk singer who was even "blacklisted" in the 1940's...   WOODY SEZ...       "There's a feeling in music and it carries you back down the road you have traveled and makes you travel it again. Sometimes wh... MORE

I've Got a Woody...

(125)
...Guthrie album! Apologies for the seventh grade boner joke. And now, on to the review! When Woody Guthrie was dying, Bob Dylan used to go to his hospital room and play for him. Dylan has said he was essentially a living Woody Guthrie jukebox at that time. This probably tells you everything you need to know about Woody Guthrie's influence on not only folk music (Pete Seeger was another disciple), but also rock and roll. Woody Guthrie leads to Dylan, Springsteen, Mel... MORE

Characteristically, Woody's version sees a proliferation of verses. These posts, by the by, in no way suggest or condone trafficking or indulging in unlawful substances. My purposes, on the contrary, are strictly educational and cultural-historical.

the end of summer?

(6)
I remember summer last year pretty well. It was a Tuesday. Now that there has been almost five full days of sun in Scotland, it has started to rain. Go figure, eh?So I'm stuck inside now, surrounded by bottles of sun cream and cold cans of pear cider. Oh, and I'm listening to Woody Guthrie.Asch Recordings Volume 1 was upped to deekmedia a few days ago and I liked it so much that I went out and bought the CD yesterday. Bob Dylan has cited this guy as an influence a whole ... MORE

Blog post image preview Yesterday Down With Tyranny's Blue America candidate was Pennsylvania's progressive Democrat Sam Bennett of Allentown. The night before I asked her to guest host the Late Night Music Club at Crooks & Liars. Her selection was "This Land Is Our Land" and although her manager suggested we use the updated and popular Bruce Springsteen version, which Sam also likes, she re-iterated to me that it was Woody Guthrie's original that makes her spine tingle. Listen: What ... MORE

Woody Guthrie, though dead by the time, played one of the largest roles in the hippie movement by making the protest song very popular and single handedly influenced Bob Dylan into the Folk movement. He was way ahead of his time, I would easily choose him over anyone to see in concert.
