OK, so if the first track is good, generally you're going to keep listening. And a strong track two can't disappoint. It has to expand on the mood of the first track while solidifying the theme of the entire album. It has to make you want to _keep_ listening to said album. It needs to make you wonder what could come next to continue the strong beginnings and thematic scheme presented by the first two tracks.Van Morrison, having already proven himself both a jazzy soul... I was reading fairportfan's post on the Fairport Convention contractual obligation album (http://mog.com/fairportfan/blog_post/3851) and it got me thinking about my favorite contractual obligation album. In 1967, Van Morrison had to fulfill his contract with Bang records, and his frustrated response was to record a sincere sounding yet completely hilarious album. Most of the songs are under a minute in length and include such classics as "Want a Danish", "Twist and Shake... MORE

Blog post image preview Holy Crap! Van Morrison actually sat down with media and gave an interview today, March 10th. He never does this! My life long dream of possibly interviewing the Irish man behind one of my most favorite albums of all times (Astral Weeks) is one step closer. Van the Man gave a little chat with The Today Programme about his 35th album Keep It Simple on BBC Radio 4. (Damn! Along with the whole Hells Angels/Mick Jagger assassination thing, BBC 4 Radio has been on fire!) ... MORE

Geez it's been a bit since I made a real post. Sorry 'bout that. I've been busy as hell these past couple weeks. As a results I haven't had the chance to listen to much, but I have been digging a few things. Most notably this new compilation cd called When Blues Met Rock. My mom picked it up at Starbucks (I know, I know. Unfortunately she's addicted to that place) and remembering that I was a fan of the genre got it for me. Here's the description on the cd: "The b... For years I listened to at least one Van Morrison track every day, often playing one of his songs to energize myself before going in to teach a class or give a lecture. We're talking major obsession, here... so bear with me and this long post. These days my Van-time comes in waves, on and off. Lately it's been on to an unusual extent, due not only to the release of his latest album Keep It Simple, but also to a belated discovery of his 2002 disc Down the Road which I had... MORE

I've mentioned Van Morrison's A Night in San Francisco in an earlier post. In 1993, Van Morrison released Too Long in Exile which featured collaborations with John Lee Hooker. A Night in San Francisco was recorded in December of 1993, and I'm inclined to believe that the collaboration on Too Long in Exile led to the line-up that appears on A Night in San Francisco. And, what a line-up it is. In addition to a solid back-up band headed by Georgie Fame (and featuring the... MORE

If you're looking for some good reading this evening, check out this excellent essay Lester Bangs penned about Van the Man and the masterpiece Astral Weeks http://www.harbour.sfu.ca/~hayward/van/reviews/astral.html The Van Morrison vinyl has been on heavy rotation in our house since Valentine's Day. My wife and I are seriously considering referring to Valentine's Day as Van Morrison Day for the rest of our lives.

According to the awesomely named Mitchell Peters of Billboard, Van Morrison is set to perform his seminal album Astral Weeks in full, and he's performing it twice. The shows will be held November 7-8 at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, will feature some of the album's original musicians, and promises nudity! Okay, the latter's only true if I make it to one of these shows, because I'd be so excited that I'd get nude and stroke my "Slim Slow Slider" and shoot my "Sweet Thing" "B... MORE

Free music video of Kingdom Hall (11)
It's four full decades since Van Morrison released his first post-Them set of songs, during which time he has rarely had as long as two years between solo album releases. That's a prolific output by anyone's standards, but it inevitably means there have been periods when his material has been more impressive because of its volume, as opposed to its execution. Over the next 12 months or so, Van's 30-plus albums will be dusted off and presented to the buying public for fre... MORE
