...and today is no exception. This is from a posthumously released album that collects Van Zandt's earliest studio recordings. And it is just a good song for a blue Friday.
UPDATE: I have replaced the Rhapsody file with the mp3.
Townes Van Zandt was one of that rare breed of singer/songwriter/poet/performer who transcends genre, style and time. His songs have an honesty about them that's impossible to fake. With his eye for the telling detail and a poet's way with words he wove tiny vignettes of everyday people living everyday lives. As often as not his characters have been beaten down by forces they cannot see or comprehend. Just folks gettin' crushed by life. But Townes Van Zandt was so much mor... MORE

when I read that first paragraph: "Unlike my main obsessions - Van Morrison and Nick Drake and various American folkies and songwriters, such as Townes Van Zandt ....

This one made an appearance in the movie "Off the Black", starring Nick Nolte (cool flick, check it out).
Some live clips of mashed up Townes playing some of the great ones. Not sure where he was playing (relying on youtube for the info). Even though he's remembered as a great songwriter I love his cover of the Stones' Dead Flowers
I just saw, "be here to love me" the Townes Van Zandt documentary. If I have ever been more depressed by a film in my life, I can't think of it.
Fans of Americana should run to their netflix account and find this movie. A documentary shot in the 70's features great music from some of todays Alt Country heroes Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell and Townes to name a few. Highlights include an unrehearsed Christmas Eve sing along at Guy and Susanas house. Here's a clip featuring Townes.

Watched the Townes Van Zandt documentary "Be Here To Love Me" tonight. The story is nothing new, always the same in fact: the genius, the drinking, the drugs, the demise. But the movie is a beautiful tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century. It's amazing, listening to his songs: they are so good, they seem effortless. Musical storytelling is a true gift, that much is clear from the beginning; Van Zandt's songs play a big role in the modern Am... MORE
