What a dirty rock pleasure it was to catch The Cobras last week at Maxwell's. Joey Mazzola, who played guitar on my upcoming Detroit LP, graced the stage with his wildly expansive chops and even sang some skillful back up. I had no idea he could sing too. In this vid I just found, he's playing bass. Where does it end?! Rachel Nagy sports rock pipes of gold and is powerful, unique, and sexed out to the nines; the kind of woman you look at and realize immediately, "She w... MORE

Three weeks after the stupendous Grinderman show, I find myself again at Slim's to see The Detroit Cobras. Traffic is favorable this time around and I get in a bit before The Willowz kick off the evening. I find a spot to lean on the bar, sip a beer, and relax. I don't know much about this Anaheim band, but I can tell their set is weighted less towards their folky than their bluesy, psyched... MORE
I was reading Rawk's post about grief, frustration, and feeling that our efforts cannot dissuade others from catastrophe. I cannot tell you how much I relate. I shouldn't miss this chance to point out that the Detroit Cobras are fucking great and any of their CD's are worth picking up. I'm predisposed to "Baby", but mostly because the included "Seven Easy Pieces EP" features Greg Cartwright, as near as it comes to a guarantee of my liking something.
So yeah, anyway, thinly veiled references to kinky sex...
I'm thinking about getting tickets to see this band when they come to Dallas this August. Has anyone here seen them live, and if so how was it?
Here's a sample:
Anna's post today gave me a brilliant idea. My father-in-law's coming back to town for a weekend or so. He's a notorious 50's and 60's music junkie, and I've already enabled him by showing him how to burn CD's on his new laptop. Here's the plan: I'm going to replace his CD's with the following CD's: The Detroit Cobras - Mink Rat Or RabbitThe Detroit Cobras - Life, Love And LeavingThe Detroit Cobras - BabyThe Raveonettes - Pretty In BlackBlack Rebel Motorcycle Club - Ho...
