Scout Niblett is like a bizarre cross between Nirvana and Bjork - with the former's rawness, powerful yet spartan aesthetic, and passionate intensity; and the latter's eccentricity and vocal capriciousness. Rating: 8 The rain is coming now and it doesn't seem to be letting up. Soon it will be snow with the certain air of whimsy that brings, but right now it's that constant, drizzling, oppressive rain. Good thing too because i've been seriously jonesing for a Bonnie Prince Billy fix. I've just returned from seeing (an evidently less than healthy) Scout Niblett playing at the Carling Academy in Oxford (UK). She made a false start on one song, her guitar was (as ever) slightly out of tune, her set was short, and, I was told, the performance wasn't up to her usual standard. I thought it was brilliant. Never previously having seen Niblett play live, I have no point of comparison. Obviously, she _is_ pretty ill - but she still performed with a mesmerisi... MORE

This was the second time I'd seen Scout Niblett, and I loved it. Mostly she played alone on guitar, but occasionally her drummer joined her and sometimes she played drums herself. She played songs mostly off her last two albums and I was happy to see her in a more intimate venue. Can't wait until the next time she's in London.
Support came from Peggy Sue and the Pirates, who instantly won my approval by using a melodica.

That wonderful Scout Niblett is on the move again. The first single "Dinosaur Egg" is already out and the album, "This Fool Can Die Now", is out on October 15th.
She starts touring the US in October and then crosses the pond to the UK and the rest of Europe. Already got my ticket for the Copenhagen show (at Loppen in Christiana).

Scout Niblett's new album, The Fool Can Die Now, features more of the vocalist, drummer, and guitarist's sparse creations. The electrosprinkles of Kidnapped by Neptune are brushed aside in favor of Will Oldham guest spots and occasional orchestration.
