If you don't know Pavement yet, now would be a good time to change.
PS: This video was banned by witless MTV people because it made them dizzy...
You may want to push play on the mixwit tape before starting this. Tracks missing from the mixwit are Newark Wilder and Fillmore Jive.
I had been listening to Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain which I believe to be their finest album, and couldn't help but feel the bands exhaustion. It's a rock n' roll wake of sorts. A wake that had to this point been in progress for about 15 years. It is road weary and ready to sleep in it's own bed afte... MORE
One of the most interesting things about Stephen Malkmus, whom I regard as the best songwriter of his generation, is that his solo work marks such a clear break from what he did with Pavement, even though the musical continuity is clear. It's in the _lyrics_ that the divergence manifests itself. Although his dexterous way with words has always been in evidence, his solo work abandons the themes that recurred on every Pavement album, including their last one, the terribly unde... MORE
1991:
- The year I REALLY got into music.
- 13 years old.
- The cusp of the grunge explosion.
- Freshman year of high school.
Thought I'd go back and see what I my favorites were then, and what albums from that year I listen to the most now.
Have to admit, I was spoiled in that my musical awakening occurred at the same time as the Nirvana revolution....
Then:
1. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
2. Metallica - Black Album
3. Guns N' ... MORE

I swear, I had my "Routinely Likes: Albums That Get A 6.8 Pitchfork Rating" thing up waaaay before this article appeared on The Onion.
In any case, it's a hilarious read.
CHICAGO—Music, a mode of creative expression consisting of sound and silence expressed through time, was given a 6.8 out of 10 rating in an review published Monday on Pitchfork Media, a well-known music-criticism website.
According to the review, authored by Pitchfork editor in chief Ryan Schr... MORE
So when summer comes around, that means it's time for PAVEMENT. And really only summer for me. Except maybe winter, but only Wowee Zowee, because I got stuck in the first big snowstorm of the year coming back from CDepot after having first bought that album, so CLICKCLICK, seasonal association.
digression: speaking of seasonal stuff, if you don't know how amazing Wendy Carlos' "Sonic Seasonings" album is, then KNOW. my comment here is that i like to put the "Spring" trac... MORE
I always thought of Stephen Malkmus as more of a poet who played rock music, than a rock star. He has such an amazing way with words...and I don't pretend to know what he is talking about all of the time, but i am always smiling while listening to Pavement, so he is doing something magical.
Some of my favorite lines from his poetry:
"Cherish your memorized weakness
Fashioned from a manifesto -- lady, I am no futurist
I'm my only critic, I"
"so drunk in the augu... MORE
