Blog post image preview Nearly a year after being hospitalized for a stroke, Rock n Roll's founding father Bo Diddley passed away in the early hours of this morning (June 2nd, 2008) at his home in Archer, Florida. He was 79. Born Ellas Bates in McComb, Mississippi in 1928 Diddley would shape rock and roll music forever. He moved to Chicago at the age of seven, where he was raised by his mother’s cousin, Gussie McDaniel, eventually taking her name. The roots of his stage name are unknown, althou... MORE

As many of you have heard and a few of you have posted... Rock and Roll legend Bo Diddley passed today... Diddley has become one of my personal faves of the pioneers of rock and roll. It was when I first met Gary Trainer from the band New Math a decade ago and he was telling me about the Troggs song 'Gonna Make' which New Math had covered and he said 'You know it's got that Bo Diddley beat'... at that point I had come across Diddleys work but hadn't made the connection bet... Blog post image preview OK, someone has got to do something with the lately American Apparel ad, where the lady is wearing the teal dress. Either make it bigger, or get rid of it, because it's quite distracting. What the f--k am I saying?! Just make it bigger. Seriously. And, can I get a large version to make into my MOG page background?

Blog post image preview One of the true originals has died at 79. Let us pause and remember him with the beat that defined him: bomp ba-bomp bomp, bomp bomp It’s a beat and a riff so essential that it helped fuel the careers of both Buddy Holly and The Rolling Stones. Quicksilver Messenger Service practically built an entire career on it. Bo was also instrumental in inventing the use of tremelo and vibrato. A Rock God in other words. For a good obituary, go here. Along with Chuck Berry’s si... MORE

There really isn't much more to sayy today, as it's all been said. Only Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee and Little Richard are still with us of the originators. There's many a band started their careers by getting their heads and fingers round a Bo Diddley rhythm - the Pretty Things even got their name from him

Christ, you couldda just told me, you know I'm not good with riddles & puzzles! But you never do say what's on you're mind, do you? You go ranting on about high-minded concepts of artistic integrity, how the spirit and the flesh must harmonize, how the ambiance must nurture the germs of ideas. Its all bullshit," she said, "you make up reasons to keep from tryin"!

Blog post image preview Bo Diddley, the musical pioneer whose songs, such as "Who Do You Love?" and "Bo Diddley," melded rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll through a distinctive thumping beat, has died. He was 79 Diddley died Monday, surrounded by family and loved ones at his home in Archer, Florida, a family spokeswoman said. The cause was heart failure, his family said. The world-renowned guitarist's signature beat usually played on an equally distinctive rectangular-bodied guitar laid the... MORE

On a cloudy, humid day, I made the trek out to Randall's Island for a day of garage-rock, its anticedents and offspring, organized by Little Steven. I caught The Pretty Things, Nancy Sinatra, The Raveonettes, and the monument that was Bo Diddley. It had been a long time since I'd seen him play (the night he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Jazz Fest in New Orleans?), and he was obviously ailing; he played seated. But the rumblings that came from his guitar... MORE

Bo Diddley gets a rocking sendoff at Fla. funeral

Bo Diddley's funeral Saturday rocked and rolled with as much energy as his music.
For four hours, friends and relatives sang, danced and celebrated the life of the man who helped give birth to rock and roll with a signature beat that influenced Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, the Rolling Stones and many others. As family members passed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's casket, a gospel band played his namesake song. Just yesterday when I was driving, I had the CD player on shuffle and this magnificent slice of 1959 Diddley rhythm came scything out of the speakers, instantly producing a rocking and shaking vehicle. Today I hear of Bo's death. So very sad

This is a couple of weeks late, but I wanted to post my very personal memory of the day I met Bo Diddley -  I was saddened, but not surprised, to hear that Bo Diddley has died. He was a true original. I had much respect for him as a guitarist, not because he was a virtuoso, but because he did one thing really well and he understood the power of rhythm.

I had the rare opportunity to meet Bo Diddley, under unusual circumstances, several years ago.

It was sometime in the ea

Death is never an answer, always a question.  Sometimes death sneaks up on little rat feet, taps you on the shoulder and poof, that's it.  Some dance with death their whole lives, they're really busy dyin' but they don't ever really die.  Others carefully weigh their every move only to have a Two ton hippo fall from a plane on to their speedboat as they're pulling water skiers. Bernie Mac has passed away.  A man who wove anger/irony/detail into a rich tapestry ... MORE
