It's been raining all day here in Arkansas, and it's a bad week to be working at a flower shop. Tonight and as I was pulling into my apartments after working a twelve hour day, "Lush Life" came up on my playlist. So I parked and listened in the rain. This song has some of my favorite lyrics of all time. After the singing, when Coltrane goes into the sax, I turned it up about as loud as I could stand it and just got lost in it. I'll post the lyrics, they are worth a read. I have only recently been getting into jazz, and there's just something about it that hits a different musical "spot" than everything else, if that makes sense.
I used to visit all the very gay places Those come what may places Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life To get the feel of life... From jazz and cocktails.
The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces With distant gay traces That used to be there you could see where theyd been washed away By too many through the day... Twelve oclock tales.
Then you came along with your siren of song To tempt me to madness! I thought for a while that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness Of a great love for me.
Ah yes! I was wrong... Again, I was wrong.
Life is lonely again, And only last year everything seemed so sure. Now life is awful again, A troughful of hearts could only be a bore. A week in paris will ease the bite of it, All I care is to smile in spite of it.
Ill forget you, I will While yet you are still burning inside my brain. Romance is mush, Stifling those who strive. Ill live a lush life in some small dive... And there Ill be, while I rot With the rest of those whose lives are lonely, too.. (Billy Strayhorn)
Also, a short clip of Coltrane with Miles Davis to tickle your ears...

A long time ago my sister declared that if I were a song and not a human, I would be "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morisson. I don't even have brown eyes but she said the song "sounded like me." However, today I'm positive that I would be that song "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads. Can anyone relate to this?

I guess i would be Ray Charles' LET'S GO GET STONED
Is janahale code for Barbara Walters? I used to be Maggot Brain-Funkadelic Now that I'm a dad-Papa's Got a Brand New Bag-James Brown
the song of my life is also a talking head song. uh-oh when love comes to town.
this sums me up.- "Here come a riddle, here come a clue If you were really smart, you'd know what to do when I say Why am I going out of my head, whenever you're around? The answer is obvious, love has come to town."
What's the difference between a viola and an onion? No one cries when you cut up a viola. How can you tell when a violist is playing out of tune? The bow is moving.
In the musical world, there are viola jokes, much like blonde jokes in the outside world. Why? Because violists get no respect. I'm tired of telling people what a viola is. I've actually lied and said I play the violin to avoid it. For those who don't know (it's okay, you just haven't been informed yet), a viola is slightly larger than a violin, has three strings in common plus a lower string, and has a more mellow alto sound.
It's been a while since I've played in an orchestra. I miss getting lost in a piece of music while sitting on a stage, and hearing my notes blend with all the different instruments all around me. We would get so excited the few times we had the melody even for a moment. And a lot of people think I'm just another violin.
I chose the viola as a fifth grader because it was different, and because I had never heard of it before. There was only an elite few of us so there was less competition at auditions. But our section was small, scrunched in between the second violins and cellos. So now that you know where to find us, look for us next time, and bend your ear to hear our sweet harmonies.
The only playing I do lately is in a worship band at church where I get to play whatever I feel, and not read a piece of music. I can just close my eyes and play with my heart, and I LOVE it, even though I'm off key sometimes. And I think it goes well with guitar and some sort of drum, usually bongos or djembe.
So this is a little public service announcement I guess. For the overlooked string instrument. Long live the viola.

Woohoo! (although that note was probably a little too high for a viola)
Just remember - anyone who makes fun of you - they can't even do something to be made fun of!
Music is awesome. Making music is even better!! Rock on!!!
Very nice. I can feel the longing in your words. Its such magic creating free-form, straight from the soul music. Its an empowering thing. A strengthening of the spirit. This is an' ability to conjur the magic that makes up this amazing universe of ours an' somehow touch it, hear it, feel it and draw comfort from it. Each time you create something that has NEVER EXISTED before, those vibrations meander off into the world. You are their diety, their creator. Play that viola, girl, those things have such a soothing sound. If i had your talent i would play the cathedral forests, for these heathen places are the holiest i know.
Dont worry i know what a viola is, and i think it is awesome that you play one. I wish i could actually play an instrument. I sort of know how to play the guitar but not really because I just started learning. Anyways rock on and dont let anyone make fun fo you.

good stuff..should you ever find yourself in similar circumstances again, make sure you have "Lazy Bird" by McCoy Tyner handy...or "Footprints" by the Miles Davis Quintet...or "Tones for Joan's Bones" by Chick Corea...or "Portrait of Mahalia Jackson" by Duke Ellington or even "Margot" by Keith Jarrett...these are a few of my favorites..
One of my favorite songs ever. I love the yearning, sad way the song ends.... I haven't listened to it in a long long time; I think I will give it a listen tonite. Thanks
Thanks, Crash, for the recommendations. I'll definitely check those out.
