MOG MOG

THE MUSIC BLOGGING NETWORK

My wife and I have this frequent argument wherein I suggest she has no good reason for disliking the Beatles, other than being a contrarian and naturally contradictory sort.  This usually follows hearing something such as "Wonderwall" or other Beatle-esque rocker from the lads.  She suggests that they are more in keeping with mid 60s mods, which she is quite fine with.  (Our first date was seeing Quadrophenia, which convinced her I was OK.)  Offerings of playing Revolver or Rubber Soul pass by with nary a sound.

BTW, we saw them in concert with Manic Street Preachers, many years agoa, and Liam was essentially incoherent and clearly drunk.  Still kinda annoyed at them for that.

A psychedelic I'm outta time:

The Shock of the Lightning:

And, of course, Wonderwall  (what an excellent song!)

I'm always amazed when people say they don't care for the Beatles but I understand personal tastes because I loathe the Beach Boys and Grateful Dead where others think I must be a complete idiot for doing so, to each their own as "they" say.

I love oasis, and the beatles.............well not one of my favorites. I can listen to them, but given the choice I would take Oasis any day of the week

Interesting.  Oasis definitely has a bit more of rock 'edge' than the Beatles, but on some of the quieter songs you hear the influence pretty clearly.

I find myself on the opposite end of that question--I love The Beatles dearly, and hate Oasis with a passion usually reserved for pedophiles and genital warts.

despise is such a strong word when talking about music. Music is subjective, almost every artist has some value to a listener(unless its just pure manufactured shlock made to collect money). That said, I like the Beatles and could do without Oasis.

I have to admit, Misstee, that I find that statement very hard to swallow.  I can think of many artists that, for me, have absolutely no value at all.  I think because of the subjective nature of music, as you mention, it makes it easier to despise.  I think the subjectiveness, however, makes it harder to knock on other people's tastes.  I can say "I despise Oasis."  But I won't say "Oasis sucks."  As much as I think that, I can recognize that other people like them.  but for me, personally, they have no value whatsoever.

Beatles?   Ringo's old band right?  Yeah they were Okay.  Oasis?  not so much.

I happen to like both bands, but I guess you all answered the titular question enough to say YES, it is possible to like one but noth the other.

And I went ahead and got the new Oasis, and so far I'm pretty happy with it.

The Beatles are still hold up and are eternal legends in rock history in the halls of time....your mother should know. They have been responsibile for the sound of thousands of groups by their willingness to experiment and grow mentally and spiritually.Iam not an Oasis fan but they are a decent group.

I like them both, although there was a time when I wasn't very crazy about The Beatles (don't worry, Jeff, I've converted!), so it can happen.

Beatles are more pop, Oasis are more lad rock. It's really not the same thing, despite their similarities.

It's hard not to like (or at least respect) the Beatles, if you are a certain age, because they passed into icon status long ago. Oasis are still, "just a band", subject to the test of time.

I pretty much agree with Groon......I was going to say that I love the Beatles and really cannot stand Oasis' music, but Groon---in each comment--said what I meant, only he said it better! :)

Oasis tend to have a couple really good tracks per album - some obviously influenced by the Beatles. Then, we have the Beatles whose every track is like an oasis of pop and rock brilliance in a desert of sonic banality. Chacun a son gout.

I think that it's more accurate to say that Oasis was influenced by only one of the many facets of The Beatles. I appreciate Oasis' first two albums but I feel that, other than an occasionally interesting song here and there, they have really been cranking out the same thing over and over again. They're a one trick pony. (OK, maybe two trick...) The reason why The Beatles are so influential is because they refused to pigeonhole themselves into any one particular category. Skiffle based boy band, psychedelia, rock, garage, smarmy 40's motifs, blues, Ringo contributed some country, hard rock, etc, you name it, they did it all and they did it well.

Agree, the Beatles were INNOVATORS in so many aspects, which is a tag that will never be applied to Oasis (much as I do like them). Oasis do a fantastic mix of Beatlesque pop crossed with T-Rex glam and whatever-the-hell Paul Weller does. But they're not musical geniuses. Although I love hearing Noel Gallagher give an interview.

@ quadb...while I agree that the Beatles did almost everything they dabbled in extremely well, I do take issue with their reggae-isms on "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". A fun tune to be sure, but there's nothing "great" about it.

@drewfonts...oooh, point taken.  that's a Beatle tune that I never need to hear again.

dharmachris says:

@Quadb:  absolutely, the Beatles were total innovators and experimented with almost all styles of music.  The other sure argument starter here is if I tell my wife that without the Beatles, The Clash could not have existed to experiment the way they did.  Being a bigger Clash fan than me, that just sends her over the edge.  !

Glad to see all the excellent comments! Cheers to ya!

I can only quote Tammy Wynette's old spelling-bee advice:

D-I-V-O-R-C-E

which is an acceptable alternative to the old "take a drive to the country with a shovel in the trunk" ruse.   ;-)

All in fun...my wife thinks I have great taste but spends virtually no time listening to music.

Now, introducing you to Bragg and Sonic Youth...those are supposed to be GOOD things?
