So I've been posting some selections from my new covers EP, Songsmiths, the past few Sundays.

And the first tune on the record, is my folky, Dylanish, finger picking version of Jeff Lynne's 'Do Ya.'

There are a lot of amazing things about this, but the biggest is that Jeff Lynne actually had to approve my version before they used it on the show, and he apparently loved it! What a rush.

Second, I laid down the vocal and the guitar together, a first for me. Both are one take. Not the first take, but one take, no edits. That was a big moment for me as I ain't no Dylan, pumping out a whole record in an afternoon.

Third, I'm really excited about how prominently they used the tune on the show, during a very emotional scene with David Duchovny and Natascha Mcelhone. And I love this freakin show, so it is a huge bonus that they used my version of this classic tune.

Finally, it is also featured on the Season 2 Soundtrack along with Sheryl Crow's version of Behind Blue Eyes and the one and only Warren Zevon! It comes out this month on itunes and will be in stores in December.

I am definitely hot and bothered about all this.

Hope you like it.

I've gotta get back to posting about some of the shows I've been hitting. I don't wanna become that guy who is just writing about his own shit!

N.N.: This is one of those times when it would be entirely appropos to crow about one's own music. This is exquisite! Congrats on the deserved exposure and the props from Lynne. But I feel compelled to mention that I prefer to think of it as The Move's "Do Ya" - from Lynne's post-Carl Wayne pre-ELO tenure with Roy Wood's band. It's all about the roots, man!

i don't watch much either indy, bad for the brain

just a few shows that get my goat and californication is one of 'em

another is terminator, sarah connor chronicles

shirley manson from garbage is on it this season as one of those next level liquid looking terminators from the second film, and she is absolutely amazing

great acting from a rock singer, that is rare!

I just watched the repeat on SHOwest. Fantastic! you didn't mention that your song closed the episode as well! Nicely done Neil, nicely done.

More cowbell!

And Anna is right, Neil. Dig yourself some more of The Move: "Flowers in the Rain" (West Coast psychedelia by way of Birmingham), "Blackberry Way" (Roy Wood's Beatles obsession to the max), the proto-metal pop of "Hello, Susie" and "Brontosaurus," the winsome busker jauntiness of "Tonight," the retro surf-and-roll of "California Man," etc.

Uh-oh. I feel a post coming on...

I just had to check because I keep hearing Kiss singing this song, turns out I was part right, a solo Ace Frehley covered it as well in '89.

I can't get used to hearing this without all the Roy Wood/Jeff Lynne production on it. Amazing what a song can actually be when it's stripped right down to its emotions. This is superb, Neil, and congratulations on it being on Californication. The second season hasn't started yet so I'll be looking out for this. It's a hard show to like but it's compelling to watch. Your covers are - so far - just fantastic and special.

wow, thanks so much john

it was a total accident, just finger picking watching tv and realizing, shit those are the chords to do ya

then getting rid of some of the words, as they were way too much of a mouthful over the sparse version

i was thinking between the lyrical verbosity and the big time production, the cocaine must have been instrumental in both the move and elo's versions

mine seems to be the weed version

That's funny! I once interviewed Roy and from his publicist and others who knew them, they were complete strangers to the powder, preferring a good beer. Being from Birmingham, I'm inclined to think it's their version of a big industrial sound (like Sabbath, Slade, Zep...)

Neil,

I clean forgot to mention that your cover version is a true revelation (sorry for the infusion of cynicism, but most  attempts to transform a rockin' tune into something quiet and lyrical fail spectacularly, with Tori Amos' "Smells Like Teen Spirit"  as an especially egregious example), and that it has gotten mass exposure is fantastic.  CONGRATS!

Congrats. Your version of " Do Ya" is a far cry from the original. I like yours better mainly for it's scaled down production and your voice. Keep it coming.

Season 2 actually started a couple months ago -- it's already on Episode 8. The show is hilarious and brilliant. I only saw the first couple episodes of Season 2 via torrent as I don't have Showtime, but I'm tempted just for this show. I highly recommend renting the DVD of season one -- it's only about 8 episodes due to the strike.

What a nice break, being included on the soundtrack. Nice cover choice.

The show was a fantastic opportunity and now the album coming out as well from the show!  Your EP, a soundtrack and a hit cable series.  So cool.  Thank you for giving us the chance to air the song on the radio as well the past few months.  You rock!
