I posted far too few "Bootleg Friday" pieces this year. So I'm going to try to make up for it this month. Enjoy.
It took me a long time to like Nina Simone . It wasn’t that I didn’t like her voice. I did. A lot. But I found her music sanctimonious, arrogant, and even humorless. She sounded so "above it all" to me. It was obviously soul music, but it was soul with an edge that made me uncomfortable, in possession of none of the "everybody join in, everyone's in... MORE

Nina Simone To Be Free Legacy 2008 In the original era of 1960s political correctness when entertainers toned down their personal rhetoric to continue their careers as performing artists, Nina Simone could never be silenced. She was the voice of freedom. The original chanteuse channeled passionate reasoning and emotional fire to sing about growing up and living in a racially segregated United States of ... MORE

we've been a bit scattershot today in the aftermath of last night's historic election; there are loads of new discs & songs & artists to speak on and we will begin that work soon. promise.
until then, one of our all time favorite books, revolutionary road by richard yates , has received hollywood treatment (leo, kate & sam mendes, no less), and we just saw the trailer for the first time. (though we weren't keen initially on leo playing frank wheeler, he'll do a decent job... MORE

Life comes down to little moments, momentary crossroads of choices
placed in front of us call it faith, chance, happenstance serendipity, whatever it is, we have to ask does it happen for a reason? Who knows but it happens and what matters most is what you do within these life altering moments.
Do you let them pass you by like the breeze of a passing thought on another chaotic day? Or do you stop, size yr day by making a leap whether it be emotional or devotional it's what y... MORE

Today was a crap day. I just got this flu bug that's going around. They shut off the water, again, in my building while I was getting sick. Even though I was ill I made mi novia breakfast before she went to work, I was off today. When she came home I had dinner ready with fresh cut fruit salad. She had a long day at work and I wanted to have food for her when she walked in the door. My baby arrived from work today with a surprise for me, a gift of Nina Simone's new fo... MORE

My new favorite Nina Simone song, this incredible live version of I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl recorded live July 28, 1973 at the Royal Philharmonic Hall in NYC. You can feel the tender interplay between artist and audience. I love the way her guitarist bluesy riffs plays off her sedutive piano keys. Sit back, press play and prepare to be amazed.
