Despite being equal under the law, there is still no country in the world where women have achieved proportional political representation or economic equality.

Woman is the Nigger of the World

-John Lennon

Woman is the nigger of the world Yes she is...think about it Woman is the nigger of the world Think about it...do something about it

We make her paint her face and dance If she won’t be slave, we say that she don’t love us If she’s real, we say she’s trying to be a man While putting her down we pretend that she is above us

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is If you don’t belive me take a look to the one you’re with Woman is the slaves of the slaves Ah yeah...better scream about it

We make her bear and raise our children And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother then We tell her home is the only place she would be Then we complain that she’s too unworldly to be our friend

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is If you don’t belive me take a look to the one you’re with Woman is the slaves of the slaves Yeah (think about it)

We insult her everyday on TV And wonder why she has no guts or confidence When she’s young we kill her will to be free While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb

Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is If you don’t belive me take a look to the one you’re with Woman is the slaves of the slaves Yes she is...if you belive me, you better scream about it.

We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance

Powerful. Good combination of imagery, information, and of course music. I'm enlightened for the day.

Hey beautiful Lola, I've been checking out your entries, focused on Women issues! What is the Obsession all about? It's almost deadly, but comsuming and fiery as it reaches out for a "truth"....! I would like to know what this passion and focus is based on!?

I am really appreciating these. I've got an action coming on my site tomorrow about women getting equal pay to men (still 77% fucking percent in the US).

Posted

That's good to hear.

Rwanda has 49% women in Parliament, and Sweden 47%.

America has about 16% women in Congress.

And only nine of the Fortune 500 companies have women CEO's.

Wozniak says:

Damn. I didn't know that about Rwanda (and I follow them pretty closely). Sweden's the shit. My friend lives there and it's a whole other world.

I have to say, though, that I'm not voting for Hillary Clinton in the primaries. Tokenism gets us nowhere. Hell, I don't even know who the hell I'm voting for, but as I see it, she's full of self-interest and not service to the American people, and is all talk with little walk. But then, the other candidates thus far are, too. Damn elections (They're a year from now, too!).

Ya. America will be one of the last countries to ever have a female Head of State.

I don't know if you know the certain scenario that needs to happen in order for Pelosi to take office tomorrow sans election, and I can't exactly morally (I'm a pacifist) advocate for it happening, but I would definitely vote for her. She's the shit, and doesn't take no guff from nobody. My only problem with her is her classist pandering, but that comes with American politics. Obama and Hillary did it the other day to a crowd in Alabama, IIRC, with Obama uniting his grandfather's job as a 'house boy' - his words, not mine, with that of the heritage of slavery. And Hillary got by with quoting MLK, Jr.

Where's Paul Wellstone when you need him? Or at least an adherent?

Got plans for International Women's Day? I'm trying to look for local events to plug into, now that I know of its existence (didn't know there was one until last month when we had an editorial meeting).

I admit, since I shun television, I don't follow American election coverage very closely.

And I loathe the partisan politics of my own country. It reeks.

I'll be doing the "Blog Against Sexism" thang all week long. (You can see the banner and link that I posted a few days ago on my first page).

But... y'know... for me, it's Women's Day every day.

Viva the Revolution, dig?

You can check here for events in your area: http://www.internationalwomensday.com/

Yeah, I was checking out that site a bit earlier. And yes, every day is women's day. I'm seeing a real lack of organizations taking this on. My favorite at the moment is the Green Belt Movement who give women in Africa jobs replenishing rainforests.

Now if we can get American men to watch breast implant surgery, we'll be getting somewhere.

Blarg! You see what women will do to themselves to gain male approval? It's sick, man.

Women receive 90% of all plastic surgeries performed in America.

Female genital mutilation is one of the most controversial topics in anthropology. The classicalists argue that you shouldn't interfere with those you study (as if that were possible) while many others (myself included) see FGM as something that needs something done about. It's cruel, malicious, sexist, and useless.

If we were talking about radical penile excision, I'm sure anthropologists would be taking a far less philosophical view towards it.

Posted
| Permalink

Or should I call them anthro-apologists?

Posted

Wozniak says:

Yeah. We got in huge arguments about it - luckily more and more of the anthroplogists that were being turned at my university were activists. U of Mich, however...ugh.

If you've a collection of those, you can burn them to a CD (not as data) and then rip them back as .mp3's. Works wonders with getting rid of iTunes protection, and with CD-RW or DVD-RW, is incredibly cost-efficient. Damn the man and the RIAA.

PS. American gender wage-gap from an article Feb. 4, 2007:

"Women earned 81 cents for every dollar a man made in 2005, up from 76.1 cents in 2001 and 66.6 cents in 1983, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The agency found the gap narrowest for workers in their 20s and early 30s. Women 25 to 34, for example, earned 89 cents for every dollar men made in 2005, whereas among 35- to 44-year-olds, women pulled in 75 cents for every dollar that men made."

The gap widens at the professional and executive level; and if we're talking about part-time work, women earn about .60 cents to a dollar compared to men.

Women in Canada are at about .71 cents on a dollar.
