Thanks to TyleDurden ; "you ever think about writing kids books or something (I'm sure you could write adult books, it just seems like you are so good with kids :))

anyway -> TD out", I am now looking into two books - one is still my own style of memoir... a music/friend memory book that helps to explain who I am & why... but now I am talking with a very talented artist friend of mine who actually majored in children's psych to be the artist/creative consultant to a children's book(s)...

I know this seems out of left field - at first it did to me too - but something Tyler said made total sense to me... I really do love kids - I GET them - I adore them - love seeing what makes them tick & really love reading to them - how cool would it be to read a book to them that I wrote ?!?

My first inclination is to write "a book of whys..." as my cousin once asked me while we were at the shore... where does the ocean go at night... WHY does it go away... as I struggled with my 7 year old mind to figure out what would answer best - getting shot down at every turn - I finally said to her... "because God pulls the plunger every night to let the ocean go down the drain - then before we all wake up in the morning, he puts the plug back in the drain & fills the ocean back up each day". "OK" she says...

I just think it would be a great book for children and their parents - especially if the ending page is as my friend's husband says... "BECAUSE I SAID SO" ;)

Ok so that is negotiable - but I think a book of whys would be a fun book for anyone to read... and I haven't seen one before... so it's what I am working on as I work on my music memories...

Any thoughts from those who's impressions I value most ?!?

When your books get published I want to write one of those little blurbs you seen on the back sleeve of the book!! That would be a real honor :-)

Consider it done brother :)  You have to promise to like it first - you been reading my memory posts ??  ;P

I think it's a great idea-both books actually.  Good kid's books are hard to come by; most are stupid sappy sweet or trying too hard to make a point about something sad.  Most people talk down to kids, like they are stupid and the books out there are similar.

I doubt I would be able to do the photography for your kiddo pages though.  :)

but you'd rock the cover & I expect you to do so - once I get the idea fully realized - I am sure one of the why's will be about music & that's where my AMBERSIS comes into play :)

Best of luck as always with this, cant wait to see what your ideas are for a childrens book. The one I have been working on is almost done, just have to figure out a way of getting it to the masses.

I used to teach preschool and then early elementary school and LOVE the idea of a book of whys. Based on your ocean answer "because God pulls the plunger every night to let the ocean go down the drain" - I am predicting a best seller

I always give books at baby showers - and think you have a ready made market there.

@debi... AWWWW thanks much - it cracked me up at the time - I tried for nearly an hour it seemed for a 7 year old - to explain - nothing worked... but the plunger did... I never looked back :)

@Chris... thanks my friend !!! - can we post pone the meet up til the end of Sept ?!?

I think a book of whys is a great idea--especially since that's all kid's favorite question.

And it would definitely have to end with BECAUSE I SAID SO!  Because invariably, no matter how patient a parent or older sibling or whoever is, that answer inevitably comes up at some point.

Wow, that a great idea Lizzie! My kids are probably too old, but I do have nephews and nieces coming up that would love it. :)

Hey Lizzie, adults need a "Book of Whys" too!  At least I do.

@laposhti... I do too - that was the other suggestion from my friend's husband - we ALL need a book of whys ;)

Yes.  I'm up for a Philly area Mog meet, but it would have to be after Oct. 5.

That TOTALLY works for me - after Oct 5th sounds divine !!!  Can't wait :)

Philadelphia MOG meet? Yes! I was just thinking about when we might next covene....

It was originally thought for an early mid Sept - but I can't rock that as I will be in Denver mid & at MMJ early... so anytime after Oct 5th works perfectly for me...

All the best of luck...

But may I make one suggestion? Instead of saying "Because I said so" you should use one of my favourite phrases when someone asks an unanswerable questions: "Because as Run DMC once said: It's like that, and that's the way it is" :P

Sounds great! Good luck with the books, and hope I'll be able to read one of them some day, even if I'm way too old for one and kids are nowhere in sight. I'll pick it up regardless. ;)

On top of that GREAT idea .... what about something for the kids called "Whats that?"  It could be a prequal to "Why".  Every kid asks that question prior to comprehending why.....right?  ; )

@MikeZ... thanks friend - you counting down the days yet ?!?

@JoxBridge... Jox - you have a point - how ideal would that be as the answer from a music junkie adult to a child music junkie ;)  I may have to rock that one out :)  In fact - I think I must !!!  You don't mind do you ?!?

@Stefan... Thanks :)  I can assure you the memory book will be right up your alley - though there will be a few chapters involving kids - it's gonna be primarily about me becoming the music junkie I am today & a thank you to those who shaped me :)

@Neill... be afraid - be very afraid ;)  Thanks luv !!!

@Tallpo... sure - that's an idea for sure - only... the answers are pretty self explanitory - that's a scrub brush, that's daddy's pee pee ;P

Of course I'm counting down the days.  I was just thinking of everything that needed to be done before Denver, when I realized I owed you a check still.  :)

Let me offer CBW's market research laboratory - Two children who like books, one more to chew on then the other.

A book of why's is a great idea.  My favorite thing is watching how my son creates logical solutions for things he doesn't understand (that are better than the actual answers- I'm not sure, et how this translates to a book, but when I do I'm sure we'll share shelf space :).

And example of this is where does trash go when it blows away?  Well, our answer would be much to uninteresting, but his solution so much more interesting: it blows up into the sky and planes pick it up with a pincher of some sort, and then they bring it back down and throw it out.  If I mapped this out, I know he knows garbage goes in the trash bin, he knows wind blows stuff in a confusing manner (it's actually a bit of an anxiety for him), planes go up in the air, and do "jobs".  His thread of connections is much more interesting than any answer I could ever offer,

Posted
| Permalink

@MikeZ... no worries - so long as I get the money - even if you wait til Denver - that's fine :)

@TylerDevil... LOVE that - wonder if your son would let me use the idea ;)

Posted
| Permalink

I'm not sure, he keeps copyrighting the stories when I tell them to my mom.  I think he's gonna work for the RIAA!:)

Kids are the masters of improvisation.  I think Walkingthecow posted a negativeland song of a little girl singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and it was just great.  It reminded me of my son not letting the simple fact that he doesn't know all the words or how to say them stop him from singing a song.  Truely amazing stuff.

I think that was Zenpop actually - but I agree - brilliance in children - so great & easy to find :)

Let me also add my approval to the "Book of Whys" idea. It's a potentially valuable brand. If you can, get that title legally (and, if possible inexpensively) established as your intellectual property in the service of that particular type of publication. The professional has spoken. And, in passing, I'll note that I liked and was amused by Jox's comment, but I think that "Because I say so!" has the proper all-generational whimsy that such a (hopefully) humorous book needs.

Thanks for the up heads Mr. Cutlery - never would have thought of that - and will definitely look into it !!!

I'm liking both last pages - maybe it's like that & that's the way it is can be the quote at the beginning for the parents ;)

You've just made me realize how un-kid-friendly I am.  I'm way too analytical.  If my daughter asked me about where the ocean went at night, I'd immediately start trying to explain about tides and the moon, and whatever else.  Lizzie, PLEASE write this book for lost parents like me. :)

Working on it darlin - actually have my first one posted - the whys are gonna take time - there are so many whys to collect !!!

But Chase the Albino Cricket's Cricketchella weekend is up & awaiting your thoughts !!!

TroyPowers says:

lol...if you need a list of why's...I'll be happy to pack my little one in a box and ship her to you.  She's got a million and two.

Is the Cricketchella story and actual draft of a children's story?  I wasn't sure if it was, or just you deciding to post as an alter-ego. :)

Posted
| Permalink

It's an actual draft... first draft that is... now to find an editor (annieander & her husband), an illustrator (Kate, Po or Sam) & publisher... ANYONE ANYONE ?!?
