Artist: Various s
Album: The Best of Communism Vol1
Track: We Thank You Comrade Rakosi
(35)

Ok, here goes my little foray into the world of odd wars... Ladies and gentlemen, may I present, The Best of Communism; Vol 1.

Showcasing everything from the stern marches of the 1920s to the joyful ditties of world revolution, this disk is the ultimate in leftist anthems. Whether you wish to stir yourself towards the barricades with The Internationale or have an evening sing-along with The Happy Pioneer (A climbing squirrel in cheer/ So joyful is the pioneer...) this record has it all.

Highlights include the enigmatically titled The KISV Welds Us Into Unity and the renowned Poljuska. Yet for a red-button treat, I have decided to include We Thank You Comrade Rakosi, an ode to the Hungarian communist party's answer to Stalin.

And if any beats this for oddness, I'll have to get The Hitlerite Songbook out of the loft...

Pixie... dancing? Not quite, but after a few of these tracks I'm ready to throw off the shackles of oppression.

Ahaha Poe, the songbook belonged to my grandfather, he was a teacher and picked it up on one of his trips to Germany during the 30's, we also have Great German Drinking Songs... and for the record, we do have a lot of interesting stuff he picked up 10 years later when he was fighting against the star of the songbook.

Thanks Deg... I'm taking oddness as a compliment here.

The KISV Welds Us Into Unity.... what a genius song title - a whole political system explained in six words. Though I suspect The Hitlerite Songbook can give it a good run.

This is weirdness supreme - thanks!

Inspiring, Jox - in a completely decadent, capitalist way! O.K. All you peeps must - MUST! - get ahold of the DVD of the terrific 1997 documentary "East Side Story" about the history of ideologically-correct commie/Soviet movie musicals. It's amazing, entertaining, funny, chilling, and cray-to-tha-zee!

Oh. My. God. I must have this record.

I'm not a communist, or even a leftist, but I have had an obsession with peeking behind the Iron Curtain since I was a child. So, yeah, this is right up my alley.

And you found this where?

I picked this up in a place called Grutas Park, which is just outside Budapest - it's a park filled with statues from the communist era, and they have this sort of stuff in the gift shop. I really need to go back and get vol 2!

So, what, do you Europeans just gallavant across the continent at will? I'm American, and I've never even left the country. It's expensive.

Joxley says:

Pretty much... we have plenty of budget airlines, and trains on the continent are fairly cheap. Plus, we get way more paid holiday leave than you guys. And of course Europe is small enough that you can get to most places in less than 5 hours.

This shows all the countries I've ticked off so far...

If this song is any indication, a Soviet bloc nation would have been such a happy place to grow up....

Too true Ivy - I mean, who cares if your parents have been arrested and deported for no reason if the state is giving you tunes like this...
