We've seen the signs the last couple of months or so: less posts in general, less comments on the posts that are made. A lack of interesting content all around. Technical glitches, missing posts, buttons that don't work. We've been gettin frustrated at these problems, and also at the PTB for various reasons. And many of us have decided that MOG is on its last legs. we've written our obituaries and moved on.
Well, I'm not ready to do that yet. I love this place. Even with all of its faults it's still that one place I look forward to visiting more than any other. I've been here for over two years now, and I can't think of a better way for those two years to have gone down. And I've decided that, just like anything else i love, I'm not ready to give up on it so easy.
So, this is what I've decided to do. During the month of December, I'm going to make at least one post a day. Or, the equivalent of that (due to absences around the end of the month). And I'm asking each of you to do the same, if you think MOG is a place worth fighthing for.
While there are no rules for this sort of thing, here's what I'm planning on doing for it:
-a post a day throughout the month of December. Or the equivalent. So, by the end of the month, I will have made 31 posts. Due to absences, there might be more than one post on some days, but by the end of the month 31 posts will have been made
-each post will have a track uploaded, or a video posted. Maybe it will relate, maybe not, but the more content we get on here the better.
-I will not limit myself on length requirements, but each post will be hopefully of more worth than just "this is my daily post. See ya."
-I will also try to find at least three other posts to comment on each day. I think the fact that I have to put "try to find" in there, more than anything else, shows the problems going on here. We aren't posting. We can blame everything else we want, but if we don't show up to the party it's always going to suck.
-if technical glitches get in the way of a post, I won't get angry or frustrated. I will just try again later.
hopefully, in the next month, I'll post things you guys are interested in seeing and hearing as well. Hopefully, some of y'all will join me in this? I'm not ready to see MOG go rock-and-roll heaven. Even if they do have a hell of a band.

My Trusted MOGs
Great idea, and I think I'll try to do the same.
My Trusted MOGs
Awesome, Dale!
My Trusted MOGs
Love the idea of it, but I can't commit to one a day. I did try that about 2 weeks ago and it seemed like interest died out as I went along..I like to work the posts (ie comment in real time), so volume is less fun for me. If I make a big post and have time to work it, I do better with comments and feel better about the post...So, what I can do is one mega-post per week..I'm workin' on a biggun for Monday..9 songs,9 pix..
I think the commenting part is essential .I don't think I've gone a day without dropping 3 comments, except when I've been on announced hiatus. Well, maybe a day here and there.
My Trusted MOGs
Love the idea too! I agree with Cody that comments are essential, so I will commit to either a post a day or several comments per day. I definitely look forward to surfing the posts, but admit I am not as diligent at commenting as I should be. I too love this site, and have been introduced to some excellent music over the last 2 years, and don't wish to see it fade away.
My Trusted MOGs
Cody--completely understand. And the mega post still works. I'm just trying to get content up so that we'll all have a reason to come back. your megaposts pack as much content in as seven of my normal posts (well, with 9 tracks, more than seven of my posts) so it seems like you'll still be ahead of me. dammit.
My Trusted MOGs
I am on board. I will be heading south come Dec 26 (are you ready, I WILL see you on the way home if only for a few hours) so I will make up for it before I go and maybe one or 2 from the road.
I have something funnier to say but I have to think it out, will get back later. Wifes working so I have kid duty till 8:30.
Thank god for wine and painkillers.
My Trusted MOGs
Chris and Chris--awesome! I think the posting or commenting works too. This is really just about upping the activity around here, and both are equally important.
I am, do you have an ETA on when you're coming back around on the return trip yet? We need to get some sort of plan underway here! wha'ts up with the painkillers?
My Trusted MOGs
yaa, been just lurking myself - the latest round of glitches really got under my skin. I've got lotsa stuff and thoughts lined up, though it may be a retro trip I'll sign up. Love that track, BTW, Dachmo rolled it out a few months back as well. That reminds me Chris, I still have a halh bottle of vicodin/truth serum...hhmmm...
My Trusted MOGs
glitches what glitches.. between MOG and my PC ( Shrugh) Srsly, I'd have to be oblivious.. the momentum is gone Groon, you lead the way, we follow.. .pass eh tequila I need oblivion from this hurt.. LOl
INdy x
My Trusted MOGs
I hear you Groon. My problems are that I am personally time crunched, and when I pop in over the last month there are lots of problems. I will never go away. I am just relegated to mosty pedestrian witness status.
My Trusted MOGs
I've been stubbornly loving MOG for over 2 years now. I never cared about technical difficulties and the like, 'cause I am here for the community and the music, and when shit happens, I just flush and carry on. I also think that it's a great place to be. To me, music and community are more important than bugs, which is why I never nag.
Sometimes when people talk about MOG negatively, community wise, I feel really bad, because I'm still MOGging as usual, and I feel that it doesn't matter to some people (if you'll allow a self-centered moment) :(
And I also feel that there's only one way to restore how they feel...POST and COMMENT more! So I'm glad to see this post. I don't think that I'll be able to make one post a day, for the added reason that I'll go home for Christmas, but I will try to do what I've been doing more intensely.
Here's to a united, rambling, intense MOG!
My Trusted MOGs
Ok, I'll cover your backs, 1'm spending my Christmas at home thi syear... I pull a few extra posts/comments off..for Anna and Cody... bring it on.. :0)
My Trusted MOGs
I'm always here......try as I might to leave.
My Trusted MOGs
Groon I like this idea but it kind of scares me.............does that mean you are going to give up mog for lent?
My Trusted MOGs
You know I seen this coming a log time ago, The only surprise is that it took so long. I like to think that I was one of the original Moggers and I am proud of that fact. This was a great community based site with as many opinions as Moggers and even with all this diversity there was seldom a flame war. Of course there was the occasional Troll but they were few and far between and their impact was minimal. The fact that their impact was minimal was not a testament to the crack moderating team here on Mog but rather the sprit of a tight knit community. That bring us back to the primary reason that Mog is having these problems, The lack of community. That is the primary issue here, With the community will come add revenue and the technical issues can be addressed.
Will committing to post on a regular basis help ? Of course it would, Interesting posts would help more. When it comes to posts the “Mog Music Network Partners” are a big part of the problem Its not that I think that they should not be posting but they don’t really contribute to the Mog community as is demonstrated by the total lack of responses that they post even to their own articles. So will posting more save Mog ? No. A community has to be rebuilt We have to spread the gospel of Mog. Spread it to the different social networking sites, David announced a collaboration between Twitter and Mog that’s the type of thing that has to be done to save Mog.
So lets get the ball rolling, I’m sure that most of us are members of other networking sites we have to spread the word there. Bring new blood, Find the people that are as passionate about music as we are and the rest will fix itself.
My Trusted MOGs
Great idea - I've been mogging over two years and have been guilty of fewer and fewer comments (I never was a big poster). As of today I'll make at least 3 comments and 2 -3 posts a week .
My Trusted MOGs
I will try to join in - emphasis on "try". My interest in MOG seems to be dying, or at least going into a dormant phase. Whereas I used to feel a sense of sharing and community, lately I just feel unwelcome. If I complain, I get excoriated by other Moggers or get negative Mogmails from the Mogfather himself.
The current problems only affect Moggers - who want to post their own tracks. They have been going on for days, perhaps weeks, with no announcements that management is working on the problem. In the new business model, perhaps the MogMusicNetwork and Rhapsody are the most important things. It could be that the "old school" Moggers are at the bottom of the list. I hope I'm wrong...
My Trusted MOGs
sorry about the site issues last week. we moved to new servers that are way faster and scale way better. as a result some stuff got broken we are now fixing. whenever we make these big moves it's always a 3 steps ahead, 1 step back.
regarding the community, i appreciate this post because it really is, for the most part, what y'all make of it.
My Trusted MOGs
Mark, am I one to make you feel erm, excoriated? Direct answer, please. I already know the truth, but I'd like to hear it from you.
My Trusted MOGs
I'll just say. "Good on ya, Groon!" When it comes to posting and such, I'm a little hampered by circumstances at the moment. but I'm still here and not goin' anywhere!
My Trusted MOGs
I too am not going anywhere. As always, I hear people when they say they feel let down, but this is a free service. And there is not anything like it as far as I know. I hope that the good vibes come back around. And yes, listening and commenting is where it all started for me.
My Trusted MOGs
Maybe I missed something ( it happens a bit) but I didnt pay to be here and I dont expect anything from it, I appreciate the huge variety of music that I get exposed to by who ever I stumble over. I cant and dont answer all the posts, at one point I was recieving over 30 a day, but I listen and comment when I get buzzed, we cant all like the same things, lets not get into a "your either with us or your against us" scenario. Sure its a pain when things dont work like they should but Im sure the Mog gods dont plan that. If people feel so insecure that they spiral into depression because no one comments then there more to it than Mog glitches
My Trusted MOGs
I'll do my part and post/comment more.
My Trusted MOGs
HUZZAH Groon! fabulous post! i was just commenting on another post that MOG Lovers don't post about MOG nearly as uch as the h8rs. thanks for tipping the scale a bit in favor of LOVE!
i also tried this idea about a month ago - encouraging peeps to post more. Unfortunately, most dedicated moggers are simply busy with offline endeavors. Like Oatmeal, they still read posts on MOG and intend to post more again in the future, but simply don't have time right now. i imagine that won't change much during the busy holiday season we just entered.
and that's ok. i'm happy to know that they're reading and i'll be thrilled when they post again. in the meantime, i'm getting sucked into MMN posts. as much as some people complain about the quality of those posts, i've been learning a lot and have never been better informed on what's happening in music news.
thanks again for encouraging positive and proactive participation on MOG. you've made me want to start a Xmas list with yr name on top.... i'd check it twice to see who's been naughty or nice on MOG.... ;)
My Trusted MOGs
Yes, I'm a relative newbee, but I have enjoyed the posts I've read (lots) and all I've learned (more). Still, I'm busy. And then, often when I try to post--glitches, failures, et al. But I'm here, and will continue to do what I can for the whole. Peace. And thanks, Groon (and all).
My Trusted MOGs
Yeah, I just wish some of the early defectors would come back too. There were som ereal knowledgeable people who left around the mog strike. It is all about the community's energy, not what the Mogfather and crew do for us. Naturally there is some argument that bloggers create value, and our voice should count, but in the end are we better off without this venue? NO
My Trusted MOGs
aw Groony, if this ain't the most uplifting darn post i've woken up to today. IMO the one thing that seriously debilitated MOG of late was that people stopped posting and commenting, not any glitch in functionality. i get very disappointed everytime the red buttons or widgets aren't working, but i am way more disappointed everytime a Mogger walks away when these things stop working because i think we can do better than that. the show of hands here is a step in a better direction. thanks for the post.
My Trusted MOGs
I will say that I am very new to MOG and only started posting here because I joined the MMN, which is why my posts are all essentially feeds from my site. I still haven't gotten the hang of everything yet but I must say that this is the aspect I would like to see more of, the commenting and making it more of a community. I know that I haven't really done much of the community aspect of the site since I was basically just chugging along, doing my own thing. But I see now that doing this sort of thing (commenting and being more active) is essential to this community, and I love your commitment and dedication. I'm going to try to comment on at least one post a day, and try to learn more about the people who post here and their musical interests.
Us MMN'ers aren't all bad people, I promise! Very enlightening post, and I'm glad you opened to my eyes to the other parts of MOG.
My Trusted MOGs
Of course content is king..but for the community part..commenting is king! At this point, comments per post have dropped very, very low and in a lot of ways that deters posting from folks who are looking for feedback.
I'm lucky, I've been here long enough so that I can't help but get a few shouts, but for folks who are just starting, I bet it is daunting.
So it seems like folks either get discouraged all together or they become lurkers. And its fine that folks lurk, but that's when the community goes away. It seems like that's happening..
Look at someone like Baudilino. He's ripping vinyl and posting rare, rare music..incredible stuff. A lot of folks read it, but there isn't much commenting, so he gets discouaged.
It would be really cool to see a count of page reads for a post..that could be solace for some who put the time in.
My Trusted MOGs
I'll comntinue to post about obscure/established/known-only-locally artists and music as I find them. The Winter months are busy, and result in a "ghost town" ambience second only to the heat of Summer. I've been trying to "buy local" after having found interesting seasonal music far from Hawaii. Time to rip & play artists of Christmases past...
My Trusted MOGs
I can see by the responses that this could be a better place.I think that what anyone can do to increase posts would have a good result. Sometimes I feel that all that is posted is mostly obscure tracks and I kind of like all that stuff that isn't that obscure.I would hate to see this go. I have enjoyed the banter and will try to do my part--Thanks Groon I think I have been seeing your posts going on 2 years.
My Trusted MOGs
MOGgers, all I can say to all of this is "holy shit." I step away from the computer for the day and I come back to this . . . I think, for me, anyway, this post proves that MOG's not dead. I know we can't always get this sort of outpouring on every post, but to say that no one cares anymore, no one reads, well, this proves all that wrong right here.
To those of you that have expressed support, thank you. to those that have decided to try something similar, even more thanks--I'd love to see December be the beginning of a new positive era for many of us here.
to those who chimed in with the problems and discouragements you've been facing along the way, let me say first of all that I hope I've never been a source of that discouragement, and if I have, let me know what I can do to fix it. Let me also say that we hear you, and I hope this post shows that aspect as well.
I can't respond to everyone personally here, so again let me say thanks.
Now, let's talk about some music!
My Trusted MOGs
All I can come up with is this.
but by the end of the month 31 posts will have been made
Thou shall not skip 31 and thusly move on to 32. The count shall be 29,30,31.
Thou shalt not get tired at 30 and stop counting but they shall move from 30 to 31.
If 30 is counted, 31 shall be next in line.
My Trusted MOGs
Painkillers, I don't know except I wish I had some good ones.
My Trusted MOGs
Anyone happen to know if they keep us informed of these changes somwhere on MOG.. as Hyman said this is due to a server upgrade of some sorts.. is there anyone keeping us informed , Heads up, maybe some downtime here, oh, we are almost back on track, hey its going to be down all weekend.. ?? Change MGMT 101 stuff here, even the Myspace page guy Tom does that??
My Trusted MOGs
I, like you & Anna, have continued to post here cause I love this place despite it's problems. I can't make any promises, but I'll just say I'll make an effort to post more. Good job at wranglin' up us moggers!
My Trusted MOGs
Indy, that's a good question. I think the answer is no, usually (they have done in the past, but it seems to be less and less now).
August, the effort is all I'm asking for here.
Chris: 33 is right out!
My Trusted MOGs
The problem for me is, my computer is just so slow, every Mog page takes ages to load. So if I do have the patience to load a page, and if then the comment doesn't work, or something else, then I can't find the inner peace to try again, knowing it'll take ages again.
In the weekend I'm usually at my parents place, like now, and the computer is faster, so it is easier for me to roam through Mog. :)
Also, if someone can tell me how I can hit the "enter" button and get to the next friggin' line instead of it automatically skipping one then that would save me a whole bunch of frustration as well. ;)
My Trusted MOGs
SA hit shift+Enter. The get you to the next line without the large break.
My Trusted MOGs
Ah brilliant, thank you! I just don't understand, who came up with the idea that hitting enter twice to get two rows down was too much hard work, so instead you now have to hit two different buttons to get one down. Mind boggling to me.
My Trusted MOGs
i'm glad someone is taking some steps to save this place, hopefully we are all just in a slump and not a decline. looking forward to reading some thoughtworthy stuff from you chuck. and i promise i will eventually get around to writing about FEL, when the timing is right...
My Trusted MOGs
Great idea. I'll try to put my 2cents in. At least Monday - Friday.
My Trusted MOGs
There is no way you could post
"this is my daily post. See ya."
That's not 10 words...you would have to say....
"This is my daily post. See ya much later alligator."
That would be OK.....
I look forward to being around here more often too.
My Trusted MOGs
I can't commit to everyday. This is my busiest time of the year with work and home. Is it ok if I post 31 posts in a couple of days?
My Trusted MOGs
really, it's just about being able to do what you can, however much that turns out to be. So, yes--but don't feel obligated.
My Trusted MOGs
i make no promises, but i will try to make a post by the end of the month.
My Trusted MOGs
Awesome, Mike!
My Trusted MOGs
Hey now, I been absent not because my love for the MOG has decreased ... But life has taken me away. A look at the big hole in my "best music I've seen recently" list will attest to this. I have hundreds of posts (created a MOGmail folder) I've yet to read ... Listen to ... Comment on. But I still think the site is the best music fan network going.
Life is still demanding too much of my attention, so I can't commit to anything like 1 a day ... But I refuse to go away. And hope soon to not only see as much live music as I need ... But to share the stuff that moves me, and my oppinion on what moves you here.
Don't give up the ship! Thanks to The Mog and you moggers for all the great music I've found here!
