This is a flyer for a show that unfortunately ain't gonna happen.  Long story short, two people booking shows for the same club, and not talking to each other, so we get th shaft on this one.  It happens, and I'm sure this won't be the last time.  But at least something came out of it--this ultra cool flyer, which I'm sad I won't be taping to any light poles or hanging in local music stores any time soon.  I'd be sadder, but it looks like there are some FEL shows brewing in the next couple of months!

You know, it may have been canned because you look like the headliner the way the colours and font size is put together.

If you know The Explorer's Club, then you're probably more pop-savvy than I am.  I don't seem to know what's new these days, unless I'm hearing about it from you guys, and yet here is a band I actually know something about.  However, it's not because I'm in tune with what the kids are listening to these days.  Heavens, no!  Let me take you back, 17 years or so . . .

In the fall of 1991 I was 17, and a freshman at Charleston Southern University.  This was my introduction to college life as well as the city of Charleston (where I live now, so that one obviously took).  I went to CSU because I was then a trumpet player (I wouldn't pick up the bass for another two years or so), and at CSU there was a school-related musical outfit that needed a trumpet player.  I spent the next four years touring around South Carolina (with occasional jaunts outside the state) with that group, and had a lot of fun in the process.  Made some life-long friends in the process.

But that's not the point.  The point is the group was run by the then assistant-to-the-president (of the school) Rick Brewer.  Best darn piano player I ever met, by the way.  Again, not the point.  Rick had a son named Jason Brewer, who was then around 12.  Jason was a 12 at the time, and over the next four years I got to watch him grow up a bit.  After college, I moved back to Columbia, and then finally back to Charleston.  Jason was then a student at CSU, was getting to be a pretty good guitar player, and I still ran into him from time to time.  Played with him a bit, too, at various things.  He was always playing with some group or other, was into a lot of things.  Gave me updates here and there.  I got married (Rick Brewer officiated the wedding.  Again, not the point).

Some years later, I heard about Jason's new band The Explorer's Club.  Had their music on national TV shows.  Got signed.  Things are moving for them, and I couldn't be happier for him.

If you don't know their music, picture The Beach Boys.  Check out the video.  Jason's the slightly heftier guy with glasses, rocking the falsetto.

Glad you liked it!  The cool thing he's talked about us playing a show or two with them.  I don't think the sounds of the bands would fit, but still would be cool.

I did NOT think I would like them when the long hair started the vocals. But I hung in there, and I actually enjoyed the tune. A lot!

I was (am) a huge Beach Boy fan, so good on these guys. About time.

Good post!

Okay, no more counting.  :-)

But I wanted to drop a quickie and say hi to everyone!  I know it's only been a week and a half, but after last month's flurry of posts, it felt really strange to not be touching base with MOG over the holidays.  I hope everyone had a great end of the year, however it was celebrated.  Me?  Cold in Indiana.  But no snow.  Still, all of you northerners are freakin' crazy, that's all I have to say.  I couldn't wait to get back here to the balmy south.  Today it was in the 70s, and I was in shorts as much as possible.

Christmas was good.  I got a couple of sweet things.  Music-wise, I already posted a bit of what I got from my not so secret Santa, Scotfree (thanks, Scot.  Haven't had a chance to listen to all of it yet, but I'm diggint what I'm hearing so far!)  Also, a good friend of mine (also named Scott) who I've been trying to get on MOG for almost two years now, but he refuses to bite, gave me the first Harmonia album, Musik Von Harmonia.  Harmonia was a geniune super-group, consisting of Michael Rother from Neu!, and the two guys from Cluster.  They release a couple of great albums in the 70s, still get together from time to time, and are one of the pioneer of electronic music.  Part otherwordly cosmic, part driving and noise, they carved out their own slice of krautrock and influenced a generation to come.  (All you Clash fans can differ on this, but Brian Eno even called Harmonia "the most important band in the world" at some point.)  Anyway, this album goes from Tangerine Dream-like ambient to Neu!-like pulse.  I uploaded one of the latter songs.  In the red button, you have "Dino."

I think the gift I'm most excited about, though, is this:

Hopefully soon, I'll be pouring a bottle of my own brew!  Y'all are most welcome to stop on by and sample it.

Send me a bottle:-)

Not to be negative or anything, but does it surprise you that Brian Eno would label an electronica group as the most important? Sort of like, say, Joe Satriani calling Coldplay the most important group. (referring to Satriani's suit against Coldplay for copying his tune in their title song Viva la Vida. And if you've compared the two, you may conclude, as I have, that Satch has a point) Or maybe David Gilmour callin RPWL (Floyd cover band) the most important.

Having said that, though, they sound pretty good within the genre.

Anyway, just sitting here at work starting my evening's activities early.

Real good to have you back.
