It's been about a year since I last posted, which is a shame. I spent the summer working 14-24 hour days at a special needs summer camp, then headed off to Europe to spend the semester in northern Italy. So mogging took a backseat for a while. But I'm back!

I went to one day of the Pitchfork Music Festival in July, which rocked my world. Highlights included The Twilight Sad, Voxtrot, Iron and Wine, and Cat Power. The best moment of the show happened during Cat Power's set, when I suddenly realized that Kevin Barnes was standing about 15 feet away from me playing with his daughter. Amazing.

I also caught The Decemberists in Munich this September, and they rocked hard. Here's some pictures I snagged. I was right up against the stage. The opening band was Land of Talk, hailing from Canada, a band I hadn't heard about before. They put on a great set, and I promptly bought their album. I snagged a shot of lead singer Elizabeth Powell in action, and another of me with a member of the band. I think the drummer? German beer made the details a bit fuzzy.

I'll be posting soon about faves of the year and such. Good to be back!

2007 has been a great year for music so far, with a lot of expected greatness and a few surprises (at least for me). First of all, I'm pretty sure that Of Montreal's new one is going to be my party album for quite some time. Start to finish, it's perfect for getting ready, drinking up a storm, playing Circle of Death, dancing madly for no reason...everything a Saturday night entails, really. It's fun and accessible enough to appeal to anyone who wanders by, while still being muscially interesting enough to keep my attention. On the other hand, I find The Shins "Wincing the Night Away" kind of disappointing. I do like it as a whole. In fact, I'd been underwhelmed by Phantom Limb until I heard it in the context of the album, which somehow gave the track a lot more weight. And I really like the song Sea Legs, which Pitchfork criticized as being reminiscent of Eve 6 (I don't see it). Other than that, though, there aren't really many standout tracks. I find myself deleting the songs off of playlists because they don't fit and I end up skipping them. The album that came out of left field for me, though, was Kristin Hersh's "Learn to Sing Like a Star." I'd never really heard of her before, although I like Throwing Muses. But after giving a couple of her tracks a listen (I think I got them off of Dreams of Horses), I fell in love and got more. Songs like In Shock, Vertigo, Winter, and Nerve Endings have me pressing repeat. It's pretty surprising, especially because I normally don't really care for female singers for some reason. This album is amazing, though. Anyone else digging it?

I haven't heard any Kristen H but I'll havta look into it. I generally am not into female singers either, but you and I seem to have similar tastes so I'll run with the recommendation. And speaking of surprises in 2007, the new Modest Mouse has me obsessed with it. I thought it would be OK but it's pretty much all I've listened to for about a week now!

Well, my Mog-O-Matic is completely on the fritz, so my list of songs I've been playing is largely inaccurate. My actual playlists consists of new stuff by Ted Leo, Deerhoof, The Ponys, Sea Wolf (Alex Church from Irving's new band), The Western States Motel and Menomena. There's a bunch of exciting stuff coming out Tuesday, namely the aforementioned Deerhoof and Menomena, plus The Shins and Of Montreal. I feel like I've been waiting forever, and luckily I have no classes on Tuesday until 6:30 so I'll have the whole day to listen and enjoy/critique. The most exciting music related news, however, is that I am now the proud owner of a mandolin, which I'm teaching myself to play. There's a website called folkofthewood.com that gives online lessons, and I'm working my way through them. Soon I'll be able to jam with my boyfriend (a banjo player) and his roommate (who plays the guitar). Is anyone else jacked for the first slew of new releases? What are you most excited for?
