~ Description

VV Brown hails from London and is soon going to unleash her first album on Island Records. The quote that constitutes my post's title belongs to her (same goes for the spelling of 'doo woop'), and it's how she describes her sound. I'd go with 50s rock 'n' roll fused with soul sensibilities, but I'm unimaginative like that ;)

I discovered her via Jools Holland's show, and I still can't get Crying Blood out of my head! Talk about a massive earworm. I'm quite certain it will soon be everywhere, so consider this my fair warning :) Now, don't be a boring snob and say it's all been done before. 'V is Vandellas', 5 is for 50s, and b is for bloooooooooood ;)

~ Sound/Video

The playful video for Crying Blood is all I have so far, so do enjoy and succumb...

PS2 Part 3 of the MPG now has added clues ;)

Pretty darn good.  Thanks for the turn on. I found a re-mix version available here - http://this.bigstereo.net/2008/09/23/vv-brown-hannah-holland/

As always, you've got tastes...

It's fun... but I can see it getting really irritating after a few listens... then turning into an occasional guilty pleasure

My pleasure, Eric. Cheers for that. There are a few remixes around, plus the free song at her site, but other than that, we'll have to be patient (it's a three letter word, really)!

Thank you. Takes one to know one :)

Joxy, what! Ain't nothing guilty about this. Plus, one can easily dance to it like one is on smack, if you know what I mean ;P

i can't take her seriously (but are you supposed to?) maybe it's the hair?

I've only heard one song so I don't have a full opinion yet. All I know is that I'm having much fun with it :)

My musical sensibilities are being torn in two.  It's like a Speedball of pop.  One direction of my brain says, Nope! Run! the other finds it catchy.  One hates the 50's meets Millenium fusion, but the other loves the boldness and personality of VV.

Fun..with a major label push, she should do well..I was thinking No Doubt as a touchstone..

I say you listen to your other brain direction, Tyler :)

Personality is something I detected, too, and that's why I'm interested. Personality is one of the many reasons why Winehouse's music and vocal delivery appeal to me, while Duffy's doesn't (no character, that blonde one...don't let Neill see this, I'll be begging for mercy alright).

Cody, fun, true, and let's not forget that a major part of the music which VV Brown seems to feed on was {and is}, for a big part, fun :)

I see a bit of Grace Jones in the style and the wayout POP,too. I hope you aren't insinuating I'm anti-fun! She seems a perfect candidate for stardom. I like her tude..just like I liked Grace and to some extent Gwen Stef.

Hell I wish all POP stuff was more like this, than some of the cookie cutter stuff.  And people seem to dig this too, so I don't see why there can't be more..

There is actually more, but the majors can only take one at a time it seems and the rest have to go indie where they are sometimes shunned/sometimes loved for their pop quirkiness, but not usually accepted-See Imani Coppola,Alice Smith,or Nikka Costa..

All that said, I like this tune, thanks.

Ahhh, you know what they say "Youth is Wasted on the young".  More power to her.

Well, I like it Anna!  Would love to get a dress like that too somehow...but don't think it would fit in with my usual jeans and tshirt uniform : )

Also agree 100% on what you said about Winehouse vs. Duffy.

Well, it seems the consensus here is that this is a 'fun' song & I won't disagree. Not sure I could listen to it much but who knows I'm sure it could grow on me since it has a pretty infectious energy.

And you leave my Duffy alone @;P! I'll take her anyday over that Winehouse troglodite. She has plenty of personality, you should see her live(which I did at Coachella) & she was just so ADORABLE, sweet & gracious w/an incredible voice live. She was amazing.

Not at all, Cody! Although I did think that your mention of No Doubt was a bit sarcastic, my bad.

One at a time (think about all the money they spend for promoting their one...), and the less quirky the better :/

You're very welcome. I have good feelings about the album.

True dat, Tyler. Youth is overrated (I'm just saying that 'cause I'm growing old myself...).

Glad to hear that, Julia. I like the dress, too! We can pull it off, I'm sure. The haircut? Not so much :)

Cheers to that ;)

Yup, uncle A, crying blood factor aside hehe

Good to have you on the fun board :)

I'm not talking lifestyle choices and physical appearance, I don't work for The Sun ;P Duffy might have a strong personality, but unfortunately I don't see that coming out if her singing. Good voice, gracious presence, adorable, and sweet are all fine qualities, but, in my book, they have nothing to do with someone having character. The exact opposite, in fact. But that's just me :)

No sarcasm..Just trying to orient her in the plane of things I know.

Yeah, a nice, straightforward song. I especially like the occasional scat phrasing, and even more so the harmonizing background vox in the bridge which spice the sassiness with a bit of melody. That Jools performance was cracking

the song title, the hair, the video ... it's the stuff of guilty pleasure, fo sho.

read: the half of the peeps in this thread who say they are not fond of it are playing it alone in the dark right now, and shaking their booty. ;p

Oi! That's a blast! She is so rampantly post-moderny British - all the pop in the world tossed into a blender and poured out, pink and frothy and tasty, into a milkshake glass, and served with two bendy straws. I'd put VV in the same class as the Ting Tings. In fact, "Crying Blood" was pretty Ting Tingly on the first listen. Not a bad thing thing. But, like a couple of my fellow MOGmeisters, I do wonder how fast I'll tire of it.

Read you loud and clear, Cody. Please don't kill me again, eh?! :)

Pekka, your analysation skills are cracking as well. Cheers!

poe, hahaha how true! I bet they'll be singing it in their heads for a week as well :)

Mikey, that's one hell of a milkshake! Excellent {and yummy} description :)

VV + TT = lovable earworms

We can only find that out via experimenting...that's why I keep listening to it so often ;)
